U.S. Army Africa NCOs mentor staff operations in Botswana

VICENZA, Italy – Two U.S. Army Africa noncommissioned officers discussed enlisted support to staff operations during a recent familiarization seminar with counterparts from the Botswana Defense Force.

Sgt. 1st Class Gerardo Navarro and Sgt. 1st Class Samuel Boyd, two senior NCOs with experience in supporting staff operations explained NCO roles and outlined what Soldiers learn at the U.S. Army NCO Battle Staff Course. The weeklong event, which wrapped up March 12, was coordinated through the U.S. Embassy in Gaborone.

“We offered our course overview for 19 sergeants and warrant officers from Botswana,” Navarro said. “They would like to implement an NCO staff development course of their own.”

U.S. Army Africa commander meets South African military leaders

VICENZA, Italy – Shortly after Maj. Gen. William B. Garrett III’s aircraft touched down at Johannesburg’s Tambo International Airport, he was shaking hands with Brig. Gen. Chris Gildenhuys, commanding general of the South African Army Armour Formation. The two officers last met in Monterey, Calif., during a July 2009 bi-lateral conference sponsored by the U.S. military.

In a sign of U.S. Army Africa’s growing relationship with South Africa, it was now South Africa’s turn to host the commander of U.S. Army Africa.

“Organizations don’t collaborate, people do,” Garrett said. “This visit is an invaluable opportunity to strengthen the relationship between our Army and the South African Army.”

Medical visit to Kigali lays foundation for long-term medical exchanges

KIGALI, Rwanda – Rwandan Defense Force recently welcomed senior medical officer from U.S. Army Africa and Combined Joint Task – Horn of Africa to Rwanda’s military hospital.

Col. Alfonso Alarcon, U.S. Army Africa’s senior medical officers and Navy Cmdr. Anthony Battaglia, force surgeon at CJTF-HOA, met with RDF medical officers to discuss future partnership efforts.

“This visit provided a comprehensive assessment of medical health systems to lay the foundation for long-term medical exchanges with the RDF,” Alarcon said.
